The Unexpected Gift   I just experienced something amazing.  An amazing friend just gave me the guitar of my dreams.   So earlier this year we launched a little church in our home called Oikos. It has a simple goal of providing a safe place for people of no faith, people who are done with faith, and people who remain believers but are just not sure what kind of church they want or need. The shorthand for these groups people are the ‘nons, the dones and the ums’  It’s a lovely, fun and informal group and it’s been a total privilege to spend time getting to know one another and experiencing trust and vulnerability deepen. We do hospitality and invite our people of peace and usually end up praying for one another - including any guests, which always goes down well.  It’s not rocket science, but then I don’t think church was ever meant to be rocket science.   In a recent gathering we got to sharing about how each of us are experiencing Gods restorative parenting and what attitudes and mind

20 things I dont believe

I used to get asked what I believe in by people. However it happens less nowadays and I'm thinking it is probably because there is an assumption on the part of folk that if I am a Christian, a church leader and an evangelical that I must believe in xyz, so why bother to ask. Such is the distortion of the image of evangelicals in the public mindset that some have (understandably) abandoned the title altogether. The problem I have with doing that is that you abandon the wonderful testimony of the early evangelicals who did not believe or practice that which many who currently claim the title do. In my view the label 'evangelical', much like the label 'Christian' is something still worth fighting to redeem in peoples imagination, if only to honour those who have gone before. Mystics and Entrepreneurs

What do you picture when you hear the term ‘apostle’ or ‘prophet’? Do you imagine some wild eyed, locust eating mystic? Or perhaps one of the disciples of Jesus in later life? Maybe you think of one of the charismatic leaders of the new churches of more recent years. Apparently if you google the word ‘apostles’ the first images you get are of 12 rocky pillars on the Australian coast! I think St Paul was onto something incredibly helpful in Ephesians 2:20 when he says; ‘So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.
