The Unexpected Gift   I just experienced something amazing.  An amazing friend just gave me the guitar of my dreams.   So earlier this year we launched a little church in our home called Oikos. It has a simple goal of providing a safe place for people of no faith, people who are done with faith, and people who remain believers but are just not sure what kind of church they want or need. The shorthand for these groups people are the ‘nons, the dones and the ums’  It’s a lovely, fun and informal group and it’s been a total privilege to spend time getting to know one another and experiencing trust and vulnerability deepen. 20 things I dont believe

I used to get asked what I believe in by people. However it happens less nowadays and I'm thinking it is probably because there is an assumption on the part of folk that if I am a Christian, a church leader and an evangelical that I must believe in xyz, so why bother to ask. Such is the distortion of the image of evangelicals in the public mindset that some have (understandably) abandoned the title altogether. The problem I have with doing that is that you abandon the wonderful testimony of the early evangelicals who did not believe or practice that which many who currently claim the title do. In my view the label 'evangelical', much like the label 'Christian' is something still worth fighting to redeem in peoples imagination, if only to honour those who have gone before. Another 20 Things I Don’t Believe

18 years ago I wrote a blog that attracted a lot of attention entitled ‘20 Things I Don’t Believe’. You can read that first list here.   https://philsfocus.blogspot.com/2008/12/20-things-i-dont-believe.html .  It was a way of addressing  the assumptions of many non believing friends who assumed that because I was a church leader and an evangelical that I must therefore believe XYZ, most of which was definitely untrue and made me cross when it was assumed that I did.  I grew tired of repeating this conversation but was unwilling to abandon the label evangelical, if only because of the strong legacy of the earliest evangelicals who did not believe what many current titleholders propagate.  This conversation will not go away and I  have realised that the list of assumed beliefs  (both in the church and outside) has not diminished but grown and so I felt it necessary to add another 20 things to my ‘assumption busting list’.    You’ll have to deci...
